# What Matters More Than Megapixels in a Pet Portrait Photo?

A phone photo can be an excellent portrait reference. A high-resolution camera file can be a poor one. The difference is rarely the number of megapixels; it is whether the image clearly shows the features that make your pet recognizable.

A readable face comes first

Look at the eyes, muzzle, ears, and outer shape of the head. Are they sharp enough to understand without zooming and guessing? A photograph with a calm expression and complete silhouette usually gives an artist more useful information than a larger image taken in deep shadow.

Distance can cancel out resolution

A photo may be technically large while your pet occupies only a small part of the frame. Cropping helps, but it cannot restore detail that was never captured. Choose an image taken close enough for the face to remain clear.

Natural detail is better than heavy processing

Portrait mode, beauty filters, and aggressive sharpening can change fur edges or soften facial structure. The result may look attractive on a screen but provide a less truthful reference. An ordinary, well-lit photo is often the safer choice.

Expression matters

The most useful photograph is not always the most formal. A slight head tilt, uneven ear, or familiar serious look may say more about your pet than perfect studio lighting. Choose the expression you would want to recognize years from now.

A quick test before ordering

Open the photograph at normal size and ask three questions:

  • Can I see both eyes clearly?
  • Is the full head and ear shape visible?
  • Does this look like the pet I know, not merely a good photograph?

If the answer is yes, the file is likely useful even if it came from an older phone. If you are unsure, Animorie reviews submitted images before production and will contact you if a clearer reference is needed.

Megapixels describe a file. A strong reference describes your pet.
